In global modernity the organisation of food provision is transforming in fundamental ways. Consequently, conventional national government arrangements can no longer adequately respond to existing and newly emerging food risks and the related consumer concerns. This study analyses the challenges facing global food governance and identifies through different case-studies innovative arrangements that aim at combining global food supply and local impacts in a sustainable manner.
Contemporary governance arrangements have to acknowledge the existence of multiple definitions of food quality and to deal with the growing demand from different (groups of) consumers to choose food produced with the inclusion of particular concerns. Effective global food governance therefore implies the active involvement of different social actors such as nation-states, private firms, consumers, and civil society organisations.
