International Conference: The Greening of Agro-Industries
Announcement: International Conference on The Greening of Agro-Industries

Date: October 27-28, 2005. Venue: Bangkok, Thailand. Organized within the framework of the AGITS PROJECT by Wageningen University – The Netherlands; Chulalongkorn University – Thailand; National Research Center for Environmental and Hazardous Waste Management - Thailand

Agro-industrial sectors, chains and networks in Southeast and East Asia are currently undergoing rapid transformations. This transition includes fast technological innovations, new organizational and management arrangements, globalizing production and consumption chains and networks, changing power balances and new requirements for quality and sustainability. In this process of accelerated change, governments and agro-industrial producers are faced with the challenge to balance social and economic development with environmental sustainability. Variations in dynamics, institutional settings, sectoral characteristics and locational patterns between different countries and sectors complicate the search for successful models of environmental governance, both nationally and transnationally.

Objectives:  This conference will bring together environmental scientists and policymakers to analyse new opportunities and challenges for improving sustainability of agro-industrial production and consumption in Southeast and East Asia. It aims to contribute to the design of more sustainable agro-food policies, technologies, systems and networks, and to stimulate communication between scholars and policymakers. Accepted papers will be considered for inclusion in an internationally published, peer-reviewed book on the theme of the conference aimed at a broad audience of scholars and policymakers.

Participants: Researchers and academics from various international institutes are selected to present research findings in the areas of the greening of networks and infrastructures in production and consumption, especially in Southeast and East Asian countries.

Topics: Papers are invited on a variety of related topics, including: Agro-industrial restructuring: policy and innovations; The role of small and medium-sized producers and processors; Adoption of environmental technologies in agro-industries; Environmental governance: practices and contributors; Non-conventional actors: consumers, co-ops, and NGOs; Global markets and networks in greening agro-industry; New instruments: labelling/ certification, voluntary agreements; Food safety in a globalized world: policies, practices and challenges.
