India, Japan for joint research in IT, nano-technology |
By Smita Prakash Tokyo, Dec 15 (ANI): India and Japan on Friday agreed to launch joint research and development projects in the fields of Information Technology and nano-technology. In a joint statement agreed to between Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, both leaders agreed to launch three joint projects under initiative of Science and Technology.The three projects are Joint Research and Development Programme in areas such as nano-technology, life science and information and communication technology; development of Open Access Database of the available ongoing and prospective research undertaken in both the countries and joint collaboration in the area of scientific deep sea drilling. The two leaders expressed belief that cooperation in science and technology constitutes a key element of the strategic partnership between the two countries and welcomed the holding of the 7th Joint Committee on Science and Technology in November 2005 as well as the India-Japan Science and Technology Initiative Meeting in October 2006. Both countries also took note of the outcome of intensive bilateral consultations in recent months at the level of the Ministers and expressed satisfaction on the "mutually beneficial cooperation between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in peaceful uses of outer space". India's much high-profile lunar mission 'Chandrayan' will also receive Japanese assistance as the two leaders reaffirmed their keenness to cooperate in space science, including lunar missions, X-ray astronomy, satellite remote sensing, satellite communication. On the issue of the disaster management support, Japan welcomed India's participation in Japanese "Sentinel Asia". Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had agreed to participate in Sentinel Asia- a "voluntary and best-efforts-basis initiatives" led by the APRSAF(Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum) to share disaster information in the Asia-Pacific region on the Digital Asia (Web-GIS) platform. The two leaders also welcomed the signing of the following documents of the two MOUs on cooperation in science and technology between the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of India and RIKEN; and on scientific cooperation programme between DST and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). The two leaders also welcomed the collaboration between the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) of Japan and Indian research institutions- the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, DST, Department of Biotechnology and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research- in the field of advanced industrial science and technology fields, including nano-technology and materials, energy and environment (clean coal and biomass resources), life sciences and information and communication technology. Japan welcomed India's participation in establishing ITER- a device to carry experiment of nuclear fusion- in Cardache in South France. India became a signatory to ITER on November 21, 2006 along with six other countries Japan, China , South Korea, the US, Russia and the European Union.
